IDEA Deck Straightening Systems: Induction Technology for the Shipbuilding Industry.

Shipbuilders and repair companies must straighten steel floor and wall panels to correct distortions created during the panel fabrication and welding processes. Once in service, heavy use can also distort the steel. Keeping those massive structures flat is essential for safety, fit, strength and efficiency. Traditionally, straightening was done with flame heating, using a carefully controlled torch to work the distorted steel. More modern yards now use induction heating, which is faster, safer and less likely to damage coatings or nearby structures.

Since big ships are essentially floating cities, every surface, from decks to bulkheads and to hull panels, needs to be both structurally sound and geometrically correct.

Why straightening steel panels is necessary

  1. Heat distortion during welding and cutting — Large steel panels are welded together during ship construction or repair. Welding introduces intense, localized heat, which causes expansion and contraction. The result: panels warp, buckle or bow instead of staying flat.
  2. Structural integrity — Warped or buckled panels reduce the ship’s ability to withstand loads including waves, cargo and stress. Straight panels distribute forces evenly. Distorted ones create weak points that can crack or fail.
  3. Fit-up and alignment — Shipbuilding is modular and large sections are prefabricated and then joined together. If panels aren’t straight, those sections won’t align properly, leading to gaps, misfits or costly rework.
  4. Safety and functionality — Uneven decks create trip hazards and poor load distribution. Misaligned bulkheads interfere with watertight doors, piping, cabling and insulation installation. On the hull, distortions affect hydrodynamics, fuel efficiency and seaworthiness.
  5. Cost efficiency — Straightening panels after welding is cheaper than scrapping and remaking them. It extends the usable life of existing ships during repair/retrofit.

Benefits & advantages of IDEA straightening systems:

  • Get excellent straightening results.
  • Save on utility costs. Induction is 30-40% more efficient than flame straightening.
  • Our compact design has wheels, making the system easy to move around.
  • The lightweight coaxial cable has a working radius of up to 35 meters.
  • The height of the unit is adjustable, making it more comfortable to use.
  • No flammable gasses are needed.
  • The modular design allows easy access to exchangeable components for maintenance and repairs.
  • Our chiller has a reinforced housing and castors, making it easy to move around.
  • Our systems are safer to use. There is no glare from flame, the process produces little noise and the electrically insulated housing means fingers cannot accidentally touch live elements.
Single line induction deck straightening.

Choose Single or Double Line Induction

Use our single line system (shown here) or save time by using our double line heater. Both heat uniformly and efficiently.

Consistent and reproducible heating thanks to two stabilizing magnets.

Quick-change connection system makes switching from straightening floors to working on walls or beams fast.
